Spectator mode options:
1) Spectate Custom Games
2) Spectate Friends
3) Spectate Featured Games

Spectator mode features
1) Directed Camera
- Similar to Dota 2's camera which actively shows the most interesting action in the match.

Interview with Mathew Anderson on Rise of Immortals

Neutral Creeps Interview: Berek, Community Manager for Rise of Immortals

To coincide with the upcoming release of Rise of Immortals, we interviewed ROI's Lead Community Manager, Mathew "Berek-PG" Anderson. He talks about Petroglyph Games, Rise of Immortals and the Dota genre.

Mathew "Berek-PG" Anderson

1. What makes Rise of Immortals stand out against other games in the Dota genre?

We have several things that provide uniqueness. The first is a new Player vs. Environment (PvE) gameplay mode. While the game is at its core a PvP Dota, we wanted to ensure players are warmed up to the PvP experience with an easier way to learn the game's mechanics. PvE is also great fun for anyone looking to take a break between PvP sessions.

Rise of Immortals also has persistence on the Immortal that provides a deeper level of ownership to the player's character. When first starting the game you are brought into a mini-map waiting area, the social hub. This area allows players to show off their Immortal directly, as well as find groups before a match is formed. Guilds and other features will be developed for this area as well.

2. What were the things that pushed Petroglyph to make a stand-alone Dota game?

We had an existing engine and some assets that fit the game model well. It worked so well in fact, that we've only been developing the game for little over a year and are already about to launch!

3. Why did Petroglyph select the free to play route for ROI?

The industry is fast moving in this direction for several reasons, though one of those that we thought RoI would benefit from a F2P model is the community building aspect. With a low barrier to entry, players can get interested in the game a lot easier. We can then build upon the existing content with cool new items and features that players may be interested in exploring.

4. How will ROI handle leavers, AFK'ers, trolls and deliberate feeders? What plans does Petroglyph have to reduce the number of games that get ruined?

This has been a big topic in both the development team and community. Dota games are very competitive between players by their core design. We recognize this and have been diligent in identifying problems the community presents to us, and then working on solutions that will satisfy both newer players and those that have been around for awhile. As with many online games, the system will continue to be fleshed out given further community feedback.

5. Which Immortal would you recommend to someone new to the genre?

Scorpix is one of the easier Immortals to get used to, being a more direct melee (DPS) character. Kyrie is another good one. All of the Immortals have a difficulty ranking on their official pages at riseofimmortals.com, as well as other statistics to see which one you might prefer to start with. We will be expanding these sections out at launch.

6. Message to the DotA / ROI community.

We have a core Dota game you will recognize when first entering, but be pleasantly surprised at its many unique gameplay features afterward. In many respects, this was possible only with the community's involvement during the beta phase.

Throughout the game's development, we have kept in close contact with the community to ensure that this balance is well refined for the game's launch, and want to continue to grow this relationship as we expand the game further.

Steve Mescon hints bringing DotA-AllStars.com back online

Pendragon hints revival of dead DotA-AllStars.com website

Santa Monica, California - Steve "Pendragon" Mescon, owner of the now defunct DotA All-Stars website, has recently changed the Dota-allstars.com homepage to display an image hinting the return of one of DotA's largest fan sites.

Return of one of the biggest unofficial DotA websites

Steve Mescon closed down the fan site in 2009 amidst heavy criticism for blatantly advertising Riot Games' League of Legends, widespread community boycott and Icefrog's official departure from the community forums.

Pendragon's letter prior to closing DotA AllStars:
DotA-Allstars.com Visitor,

Some of you may know me; many of you probably won’t these days. This website was born on October 14th, 2004. It was a mere 2 months after I turned 18, and it was the first website I’d ever made. Guinsoo was the lead developer (before Icefrog), DotA had no competitive scene and maybe 5% of the players that it does today.

In the years that followed, the site turned from a small forum with only 30,000 users to a massive community with over a million visitors every month, a million page views every day, and a staff of over 100 volunteers. It’s been incredible discovering the generosity of individuals who selflessly donate their time to create a positive experience for others.

In the summer of 2008, I met Guinsoo in real life for the first time. He and his boss were in town and they wanted to meet up and go out for a steak, (how could I say no!?). I soon learned that they were working on a game based on DotA, free from all of the limitations of the Warcraft III engine and Battle.net. Several months after meeting them and after several trips to their offices to learn more about the project, I joined the Riot Games team working on League of Legends.

When I first joined the team in September of 2008, my original intent was to work on League of Legends full time and continue to build DotA-Allstars.com into an awesome thriving DotA community after Icefrog’s departure.

While I originally intended to leave this out of this letter, in light of the fact that this information is now out in the open, I think it’s important to set the record straight. Many believe that Icefrog left because I wanted to commercialize, and he did not. In reality – I had learned that Icefrog had been secretly working for S2 Games after conducting a series of meetings where he was attempting to sell a full DotA game concept to a number of companies (including Riot). The differences of opinion that we had were merely that I chose to be transparent and honest about the project that I was working on, and the direction my career was going.

After working on and launching LoL, I began to realize that – in addition to having no free time anymore – with LoL available to play I no longer possessed the passion for DotA which once drove me.

The traffic on the website slowly began to decline, settling where it’s at now (about 50% of where it was a year ago), and I recently realized that I had a decision to make. I could either continue to say that I would rebuild the website as a strong DotA community, knowing that my heart wasn’t really in it, or I could archive the site, ending an almost 6 year chapter of my life that I’ve invested thousands of hours into. Ultimately I believe that the right decision here is to not trick myself into thinking that this site will be rebuilt into what it once was, and to shift my full focus and time to my new project, with an eye towards the future.

This website and the DotA community will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s been an amazing experience working with so many wonderful people and gaining so much insight about communities, people, and ultimately myself. There are more people deserving of thanks than I could possibly remember – so rather than leaving anyone out, I’ll simply thank everyone who has volunteered or contributed to this site over the last few years, and everyone who helped make it one of the premier DotA websites in the world.

The website will be offline for the next week or so while the database is moved to its new permanent home where its contents will remain archived and available to the public for the sake of historical preservation.

Tian Online joins the North American Dota Genre Market

Tian Online joins the North American Dota Genre Market

SGTY, the Chinese video game developer who recently announced their entry to the Dota genre with Tianyijue has signed up with Aeria Games to publish the Chinese Dota game in North America. Tianyijue will be released in America as Tian Online.

Aeria Games - promoting Asian games.

Tian Online will be facing harsh competition from established American game companies who are involved in the Dota genre scene like S2 Games (Heroes of Newerth) and Valve Corporation (Dota 2).

What prompted the development of a Chinese DotA game?
In the opinion of the developers, IceFrog has made DotA into a boring gold farming game since DotA 6.51. The outdated Warcraft III engine and the rampant use of Warcraft cheat programs urged the development team to produce the game, Tian Online.

About Aeria Games
Aeria Games is a California based online games publisher geared towards Asian developed MMORPGs.

Tian Online will be their first game in the emerging Dota genre.

The DotA AllStars Controversy Theory

Yesterday (May 15, 2009)
I was browsing through the now unofficial DotA All-Stars forum, the General Discussions forum was filled with angry rants. Some people were taking sides. Many people were blaming Pendragon for the mess while some other League of Legends members were trying their best to defend their game. It was a trolling frenzy but out of all the chaos, there was still no answer to the reason why Icefrog left Pendragon's DotA AllStars website. Both parties were keeping it quiet.

One thread by a DotA enthusiast tried to answer all these questions with a little perspective.
As of this writing, that thread has been deleted from the DotA AllStars because it does not help the parties involved. But I personally think it was the most logical theory to the reason why Icefrog split from Dota.

Thankfully, the thread starter reposted it at his blog so you can read it.

Pendragon releases statement regarding Icefrog

Pendragon just released a new statement to help douse the flames that the DotA website controversy started.
Here is the official statement from Pendragon.

DotA Community,

Some people may seem to be confused about the events that have taken place over the last 24 hours or so. Lots of misinformation is being spread around, and I just wanted to make an official statement.

First, I’d like to discuss my decision to mention League of Legends on the DotA forums, and to the DotA community. I have a strong passion for DotA, and the DotA community having worked with you all for 5 years now (even before IceFrog days!), and feel like there’s always been things that I’d like to do for either the community or the game that have been out of reach for whatever reason. My decision to join Riot and League of Legends is based on the desire to augment the entire game industry with an unprecedented level of community support and involvement, far more than the existing DotA, and far more than any existing game.

Some perceive this decision as one that could create a conflict of interest; I do not believe that to be the case. I feel like I can do good things for DotA, and good things for LoL, and the support and resources that I now have available to me due to my affiliation with Riot Games will help me make the biggest and best DotA Allstars Fansite ever.

While I’m not going to speculate regarding Icefrog’s decision to leave DotA-Allstars.com, I want to assure everyone that there’s no bad blood between me and Icefrog and we’ll likely work together on at least one project in the future. I have great respect for him, as I’m confident he does for me. The little details that lead to the decision aren’t nearly as important as where we go from here.

This to me is the end of one era and the dawn of another. Since competition drives innovation, Icefrog’s decision means that I’ll have to strive to improve the website to be successful without his endorsement. It puts pressure on me to deliver a new DotA-Allstars.com that surpasses expectations and keeps this site strong for years to come.

It’s an opportunity for me to retain my credibility by being the guy who does great things for DotA, and for the DotA community, instead of just being the “owner of the official website”. This is a win-win situation for DotA players, as it means both websites will need to constantly improve to compete for your attention. You guys mean everything to me and I hope to serve you loyally for years to come.

That was the official word from Pendragon_.
But it still does not answer the question why Icefrog left DotA AllStars.

DotA's Guinsoo working on League of Legends

Early this month, Guinsoo made a rare announcement at the DotA-AllStars forum. He surfaced to announce what he has been working on ever since he stepped down as the leader of the DotA All-Stars map project.

The secret is out.
Steve 'Guinsoo' Feak has actually been working on an online game together with none other than Steve 'Pendragon' Mescon that builds on the concepts of DotA.

Brandon Beck, co-founder and CEO of Riot Games has released the following statements:
"League of Legends will bring gamers competitive battle-arena style gameplay that builds upon and expands on innovative gameplay concepts that were pioneered in DotA-Allstars, one of the most popular mods of all time,"
Screenshots and teasers are now available at the League of Legends site.
